Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Does participating in PSI cost me or my organization any money?
No, PSI is a community collaborative and is currently operating on the capacity within organizations to carry-out initial work that falls within our existing work such as communicating and meeting to discuss common interests. We do ask that participants consider their in-kind contribution in terms of what they can contribute tot he collective work (for instance time spent reading PSI emails, responding to PSI emails, sharing within own network, attending meetings).

Question: How does PSI expect to fulfill its mandate without specific funding?
We cannot meet all of the objectives of the PSI without funding to assist with things like research, technology to support the web-enabled surveillance, resource development and others. We can slowly over time meet some of the objectives, but there is a strong sense that we have to do something substantial right now. We are currently exploring funding opportunities to support PSI in the initial steps forward.

Question: What do I or my organization need to do to be involved? What if some of my board members or senior management do not have an interest in this project right now?
We are looking for champions in all spheres of activity - that may come from the frontline right up to board and senior management levels of operation. It would be great if an entire organization was on board to address injuries and safety but the reality is we have a lot of work to do in helping people see the need to address injuries as something predictable and preventable and not just part of the game. So until that day when safety promotion permeates every level of an organization we are looking for enthusiastic and passionate people who are interested in learning, contributing knowledge to the collective and sharing information back within their network.

Question: Does my whole organization have to be involved in research pilots?
No, research comes in many different forms and the studies we plan to conduct will be small scale pilot studies for the most part. We may open surveys to larger groups as well. In any event, we will provide all information upfront in order for someone to make an informed decision to participate in any research.

Question: How do I know that participating in your research is confidential? How will you protect my information?
Universities and hospitals have very strict ethical standards for research that are required by law to be upheld. The research conducted under the banner of PSI and led by the research coordinator at Lakehead in partnership with Sunnybrook Health Science Centre will at all times be in compliance with ethical standards for research. Some of the requirements include (but are not limited to) confidentiality, data management and storage, research design and protocol, and informed consent. These same requirements are not legislated in all sport, recreation and education environments. It is important to recognize that while these standards are not required in all spheres of activity, they provide credibility and reliability to participants that the questions or process for studying a particular question have been vetted by an ethics review board.

Question: If WISE has already been tested in the UK, why not just role it out in Ontario?
Web-based surveillance systems are not new - they are used in manufacturing, healthcare and other industries around the world. A system that works well in one environment may not work well in another and it makes no sense taking a "one-size fits all" approach in this case. Sport and recreation activities happen in schools, recreation centres, in backyards and in organized leagues and clubs. Each of these "spheres" has unique facilitators and barriers that have to be addressed for the WISE approach to surveillance to be effective. For this reason we are working with key leaders in these various spheres to learn and ensure that the future of surveillance and knowledge mobilization is most appropriate and adaptable in every case.
